Recently, Google added live sports scores and financial updates to the mix. While that might sound like just another notification, the execution is what makes it feel special.
Last night during the game, I didn't have to keep unlocking my phone or diving into an app to see the score. About an hour before kickoff, a small, clean panel appeared on my home screen and lock screen. It stayed there throughout the match, updating in real-time. The moment the game ended? It vanished.
There was no "visual clutter" left behind. No sticky notification I had to manually swipe away. It understands the concept of relevance better than almost any other feature on my phone.
It’s not just sports, either. It’s the way the widget turns into a massive timer when I’m boiling eggs, or how it displays my doorbell camera feed when someone’s at the gate. It’s the flashlight toggle appearing when I accidentally leave it on, and the flight gate info surfacing the second I walk into the airport.
Many people use third-party launchers specifically to get rid of this widget because it’s unremovable on the default Pixel Launcher. I used to be one of those people. But now? Even if Google gave me the option to delete it, I wouldn’t.
In a world where our phones are constantly screaming for our attention with noisy notifications, At a Glance is a breath of fresh air. It’s quiet, it’s helpful, and it’s finally living up to its potential as the smartest thing on the smartphone market.
